If your good night’s sleep has been compromised by some sort of fever or bacterial disease, then you might put some blame on the binary fission process itself as the process helps bacteria grow. However, binary fission is responsible for growth of a lot of life forms on earth as well, so let’s not just take binary fission for the enemy and learn what processes make this happen.
Binary fission is going to be a fundamental knowledge for anyone who is about to study microbiology or life sciences in college. For anyone else though, it should probably be covered as a high school study.
- Before binary fission begins, the bacterium cell has to make an exact clone of the DNAs inside them. The genetic information of the bacterium is all stored in the DNA chromosomes so it’s mandatory this replicating happens properly.
- The outer wall of the bacterium grows larger so there is room for the replicated components inside. The bacterium starts to get split into half through a process called cytokinesis.
- Once the insides are completely split, the outside barrier starts splitting and two individual bacteria grow. The process is also seen in some single celled eukaryotes like Amoeba. The split bacterium is now known as two identical daughter cells, each of them is fully grown, healthy and functional.
Any life form that needed spreading faster, asexual reproduction is the method nature has chosen for them. For example, the bacteria inside your throat causing you suffering and pain were the result of some binary fission process. Maybe it is bad bacteria, but this is how fast they grow inside you.
One host gets sick or somehow altered in a binary fission environment and the whole population dies. For example, you could simply take antibiotic and kill the sore-throat causing bacterium inside your throat. It’s good and bad at the same time!
